Burying of women alive defended in Senate

By Ahmed Hassan
ISLAMABAD, Aug 29: Balochistan Senator Sardar Israrullah Zehri stunned the upper house on Friday when he defended the recent incident of burying alive three teenage girls and two women in his province, saying it was part of “our tribal custom.”

Senator Bibi Yasmin Shah of the PML-Q raised the issue citing a newspaper report that the girls, three of them aged between 16 and 18 years, had been buried alive a month ago for wishing to marry of their own will.

The barbaric incident took place in a remote village of Jafarabad district and a PPP minister and some other influential people were reported to have been involved. The report accused the provincial government of trying to hush up the issue.

Ms Shah said that the hapless girls and the women were first shot in the name of honour and then buried while they were alive. She also said that no criminal had been arrested so far.

Acting Chairman of Senate Jan Mohammad Jamali, who was presiding over the session, said: “Yasmin Shah should go to our society and see for herself what the situation is like there and then come back to raise such questions in the house.”

Maulana Ghafoor Haideri of the JUI-F said there was no tradition of burying women alive in Baloch society because it was against Islam’s teachings.

Jamal Leghari of PML-Q emphatically stated that there was no custom of burying people alive, adding that the Baloch people did not believe in it.

Senator Jan Jamali commented: “This is a provincial matter and it is being investigated at the provincial level and let us wait for the report of the investigation.” Leader of the Opposition Kamil Ali Agha accused the Balochistan government of ignoring the incident and said no jirga could order the burying of women alive and no law allowed anyone to commit such a crime and go unpunished. He urged the government to punish the people involved in it.

Leader of the House Mian Raza Rabbani said: “We condemn the heinous act and assure the house that a complete report on the incident would be submitted on Monday.”

The above news item is not just a news but a media trail against Baloch society. Baloch-Rewaj or unwritten constitution, opposes any discrimination against women. Yes, in Baloch society the adultery is a crime that is liable to be punished by by death, both the adulterer and adulteress. Apart from adultery no one can rise his voice against a Baloch women, however we must bear in mind that both men and women are punishable in case of adultery, not only women.

The burying of five women alive, in Balochistan, is a hair raising account which every Baloch condemns to its fullest. But the Pakistani newspaper reports this incident as if that this kind of thing only happens in Balochistan. Every society has evil persons that commit these kinds of heinous crimes.

The people who committed this crime are part of Pakistan’s ruling government, the Peoples Party of Pakistan(PPP). The men who ordered the burying of five women alive, is a PPP member and brother of Sadiq Omerani, a cabinet minister of Pakistanis in occupied-Balochistan.

And, Israrullah Zehri, Jan Mohammad Jamali and Ghafoor Haideri are not representatives of Baloch people, because Baloch people are now fighting a war of national liberation against Pakistan they defy those who sit in Pakistani assembly in Islamabad, in fact these three mentioned persons are agents of Pakistan and traitors of Baloch nation.

We must tell Jamali that who are you to say that: “Yasmin Shah should go to our society and see for herself what the situation is like there and then come back to raise such questions in the house.” Jamali you have sold your loyalties to Pakistan only for few million rupees. Israrullah, all Baloch nation knows you very well that how you receive blank checks from Pakistani army, in Khuzdar, and Ghafoor do not be a Baloch and a Muslim in Islamabad come to Balochistan and show your Balochness and zeal for Islam, Baloch nation remembers that when Nawab Akbar Khan Bugti and hundreds of other Balochs were martyred by Pakistanis, you were licking the boots of Pervez Musharaf.

Baloch nation have nothing to do with Pakistani Senate!

People must know that Balochs die for the name of their women. Also we should remember that in 2006 a person named Raziq Bugti who, like Israrullah Zehri, commented some dirty remarks on Baloch society, in Islamabad. Now where is Raziq?
